Tom Cruise Learning Disability
Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, better known as Tom Cruise was born July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York. He’s the son of Mary Lee Pfeiffer, a special education teacher, and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer.
His family was poor and had to move around a lot while his father looked for work.
He never spent a lot of time in one particular school. Cruise attended Robert Hopkins Public School for grades three, four, and five. After moving to Canada, Cruise completed grade six at Henry Munro Middle School. In all, he attended eight elementary schools and three high schools.
Like his mother, Tom Cruise suffered from dyslexia and as he explains was really struggling in school:
“When I was about 7 years old, I had been labeled dyslexic. I'd try to concentrate on what I was reading, then I'd get to the end of the page and have very little memory of anything I'd read. I would go blank, feel anxious, nervous, bored, frustrated, dumb. I would get angry. My legs would actually hurt when I was studying. My head ached. All through school and well into my career, I felt like I had a secret. When I'd go to a new school, I wouldn't want the other kids to know about my learning disability, but then I'd be sent off to remedial reading.”
While Tom cruise was not an academic success, he focused on athletics and competed in many sports. He played hockey, baseball, wrestling, soccer, football… showing himself to be a ruthless player. However, a knee injury stopped his hopes of a pursuing an athletic career.
He than focused all his energy on developing his acting career with his mother’s encouragement and support. While in high school, he appeared in a number of plays.
He graduated high school in 1980, didn’t attend his graduation, because he knew he had failed in the system. Like he said he was a functional illiterate. However, he continued his education and finally learned to read as an adult and became a very successful actor.
Even though Tom was bullied in school, and even by his father who he said was "a merchant of chaos", he never let his learning disability stand in the way of his success. He always pursued his dream by showing his drive and determination.
